A brighter, debt free, future for young people and students
Students currently face average £44,000 of debt upon graduation accruing interest at around 6%.
In Germany, the world’s 4th largest economy, students pay nothing, similarly in France.
There is no reason why we should be any different and our students be saddled with outrageous debt at the start of adulthood.
Labour will scrap tuition fees for both further and higher education.
We will also provide an education maintenance allowance to cover the costs of further education college and grants in higher education.
Apprenticeships are also in a mess. The number of new apprenticeships dropped by over 100,000 in one year under the Tories: we will take steps to reverse that.
I am a massive believer in lifelong learning. Our National Education Service will provide just that: from cradle to grave. We need academics and we need people with practical skills. As our economy goes through the fourth industrial revolution, re-training will be central to a just and prosperous society and economy.
